Charge
The current ESNE website could use a face-lift.
The new ESNA website needs to have a modern appearance and simplified navigation. For a logo, I've used one designed by Frank White (http://web.mit.edu/quark/Public/Esperanto/ESNA/esna.jpg). Ideally, we might create the site in both Esperanto and English with a system that could detect which language the browser was set for. In the short term, probably English is more important.
Here is the new site.
Structure
Each page will have a list of navigation elements along the upper left. These will include
- Home
- Calendar
- Contact Us
- Links
- Local Chapters
- Membership
- News
- Officers
- Verda Lumo
Front Page
The front page should contain a description of the organization (feel free to draft one) below and news items. The news items must be kept up to date every week or two.
Calendar
An up-to-date listing of upcoming events. Need someone to maintain.
Contact Us
Contact information for the organization (email, postal, phone) Currently no postal or phone.
Email addresses do not appear in a format that is easily harvested by spammers. Used Bill Harris' scheme which displays email addresses as graphics rather than as text on the current web site.
Links
Includes links grouped by questions: What is Esperanto?, How can I learn Esperanto? How can I find Esperanto news and information? What are some other Esperanto organizations? Gxan suggested creating a section for ESNE members who have websites. Need someone to maintain.
Local Chapters
Should contain a brief description of a local chapter with links to instructions on how to create one. This will be followed by a table or tables listing the chapters alphabetically by state and town. Also includes a page that allows people to submit new chapters.
Created a page called "add.php" which allows people to submit chapters for inclusion. The page emails esperanto(at)esne.net with the info including a snippet of HTML formatted to include pretty much directly into the page.
Membership
Description of membership, benefits, and dues required. (06/28/04 Bob Lidral is crafting some text about benefits and membership stuff. We're also talking about creating membership cards).
News
This should include the archived news elements from the front page. Browsable by year. Need someone to maintain.
Maintenance is easy: there is a directory called "news" which includes text files named "20040625.txt" (for June 25, 2004). The news system reads these files in and lets the user browse them by year. The most recent file is grabbed as "headlines" for the index page.
Officers
Brief biographical sketches of the current officers. I have contact information so far, but no biographical sketches.
This section should also contain individual contact information for the officers -- subject to the constraint against havestable email addresses above. Otherwise, all mail and email will go to the same place and someone will have to be responsible for forwarding it to the appropriate person; we have had trouble finding people to fulfill this function in the past.
Verda Lumo
The Verda Lumo section should contain the table of contents of the most recent issue with a link to a PDF version. Previous versions should be available as well. (06/26/04 -- Allan says he will save VL as postscript including fonts and send to me to convert to PDF).
