Several days ago, Lucy was walking our dog Plato when he was attacked and bitten by a white dog that lives down the road. She treated the bite with antibiotic oitment when they got home and we didn't think that much about it. Plato was scheduled for his annual trip to the vet yesterday, so while they were there, they asked about the bite. It turns out that if you bring a dog bite to the vet's attention, they have to report it to animal control and the dog has to be quarantined for 45 days -- unless you can document that the dog that bit yours has an up-to-date rabies vaccination. Luckily, we were pretty sure we knew who the owners of the white dog were and we stopped by their house to ask. Sure enough, they have the documentation and were going to stop by the vet and drop off the needed documents. It's pretty clear, however, that the important thing to do when your dog is bitten, is not take it to the vet. (Note: I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice).
