- I really need to quit watching the news. All of the major news outlets are slavering for war. "Countdown Iraq", "Countdown to War", and on and on and on. I'm horrified that there are so few voices in the popular media willing to express any reserve at all. I had always thought our country reluctant to go to war and yet here we are on a seemingly inevitable course rushing headlong towards war and why? Because Osama and Saddam both have an "s" in their name? Where is our conscience? Robert Byrd answered those questions in a speech on Wednesday
One can understand the anger and shock of any president after the savage attacks of Sept. 11. One can appreciate the frustration of having only a shadow to chase and an amorphous, fleeting enemy on which it is nearly impossible to exact retribution.
But to turn one's frustration and anger into the kind of extremely destabilizing and dangerous foreign policy debacle that the world is currently witnessing is inexcusable from any administration charged with the awesome power and responsibility of guiding the destiny of the greatest superpower on the planet. Frankly many of the pronouncements made by this administration are outrageous. There is no other word.
"We are truly 'sleepwalking through history'," he concludes. I think it's more like the country is sleepwalking toward a cliff.
