I haven't seen anyone else use the term pax americana -- except for me: StevenBrewer.2003-01-31. Always nice to be on the same side of the issues as Jimmy Carter... Now if people would just listen.
Last year, I sketched out a proposal for a project that I thought might be a way to combine what I usually do (pedagogy and instructional technology) and Esperanto. I was thinking I might do that as a project during my sabbatical. The title was CulturalUnderstandingthroughEsperanto (CUE) (which could be Esperanta Kultura Interkomprenigxo (EKI) in Esperanto). The project addressed what I saw as a critical failing of all of the Esperanto instruction I have seen so far: learning the language in isolation doesn't solve a problem for most people. This means that very few people will ever learn Esperanto, no matter how "good" the materials might be. I've become increasingly convinced that Esperanto instruction needs to be embedded in some meaningful task that requires interacting with people that speak other languages. This would provide two benefits that everyone can appreciate: (1) learning how to solve the task and (2) learning about the task in the context of other cultures. People would learn Esperanto, but the point of the instruction would be to learn to do something else that could only be done by interacting with people from other cultures.
