Our Dean Visibility Day event came off about as well as could be expected. I made a sign this morning that said "Honk for Dean" and we left so as to arrive at the site about 9:30. I always like to arrive early and I wanted to have enough time to scope out the site before people arrived. There was a nice grassy median where the sideway went across University Drive, so we choose to stand there. Just after 10 we were joined by one person and then another. A woman arrived a little later and, at one point, I thought we might get one more -- a woman approached us wearing a button, but it turned out she was a Kucinich supporter who was just passing through. So, altogether, there were five of us there holding signs and waving. I didn't get any pictures of all of us, but here is a picture that shows two of us who stood at another part of the intersection so as to get them coming and going.
The other sign (which is not visible) said "Take back our country!" on one side and "Dissent is Patriotic" on the other. It was nice to have the mix of pre-printed and home-made signs.
A lot of people honked for Dean! We got lots of cheers and thumbs up. One woman asked "What is Dean?" A couple of drivers yelled expletives, but at least one was referring to "Harold Dean", whoever that is.
There was a minor fender-bender at the intersection while we were there. Someone turning right stopped on a yellow light and was bumped by the car behind. A while after that happened, he walked up to chat. He was a Dean supporter and was glad we were out. We all apologized sincerely for any role our presence might have had. He said that the damage was minimal. I gave him a bumper sticker to help cover the damage and he went away happy.
At noon, we reformed, shook hands, packed up, and headed off for the rest of our weekends. I'm looking forward to checked the media to see what impact our events are having across the country. As I said, our event was about as good as could be expected, I think.
Before the Dean Visibility Event, I watched the new Lilo & Stitch cartoon with the boys. It was actually OK -- better than the DTV would have led me to expect.
