The LOTR festival was great fun. It finally ended up around 2:15am this morning. L invited me to join them in going to the Whately Diner, but I declined -- I was exhausted. After a brisk walk home, I crawled into bed and slept soundly until it was time for Lilo & Stitch. Charlie came and got me up -- to make sure I didn't miss any.

In looking through StuffSteveReads, I found a bunch of interesting bits today. There was a slashdot article that mentioned some good Community Wireless links. I've been thinking about the Community Wireless stuff again after several months of trying to shop it around on campus and I figured out a new spin. There is a group that is aiming to build an "Information Commons", leveraging the fact that a bunch of space in the UMass library needs to be renovated. Their goal is a destination where students could get access to information: people, technology, space, etc. This is a laudable goal and probably should be built. But I think students and faculty don't need another destination: If we think a little bigger, we can make all of Amherst an "information commons" where all of the destinations would give people access to information. I mentioned it to one of the "information commons" booster and he liked the idea and asked if he could take it to someone another level up. The real question is whether the campus is willing to think big enough.
