I think there are still some exams tomorrow, but almost all of the students have already left. There were still a few people around the BCRC, but it was pretty quiet. A good chance to focus on stuff and get work done!

I spent the morning rebuilding Netatalk for the Digital Mapping Lab. They installed new G5's in there during the semester and we had built Netatalk to replace a version of the Columbia Appletalk Package that we couldn't connect to from OS X. But it started acting flaky. I had built it quickly and without the new CNID system. So after the end of the semester, we decided to rebuild it from scratch. We had built it and were starting to install it when we discovered that, although we'd shut CAP down when we'd first installed Netatalk, at somepoint the machine had rebooted and CAP started back up again. Hmm. That could explain a lot of flaky behavior! It took most of the morning, but we got the new version installed and set up.

The Muppyville Adventure continues. Several parents spoke with me about how excited their children were to use Muppyville. One girl couldn't log in so I reset her password. In the end, it appeared that, in her case, firewalling software was preventing her from logging in -- her father fixed that and she could get in. I made increasing numbers of the kids programmers today. The results were fairly astounding: one of them began creating objects furiously, locking them, and dropping them everywhere like litter. So I spent a while this evening going around and ejecting all of the objects from places I control. And I reduced his quota so that he's over quota by a smidge. That way, he'll have to recycle some stuff to continue and then be more thoughtful about what he builds.

I had a great idea today. Charlie and I will ask all the kids to draw pictures of what they think DoggyMups looks like and then create a shirt at Cafepress with all the drawings on it. I've created the store -- now I just need to create some artwork and lettering and let the kids do the rest.
