I got up around 5:30 this morning and went out walking. The schedule showed that the first event was a continental breakfast at Cafe Bio, which suggested that the Commons was closed. Since I'm eating low carb, a continental breakfast doesn't really help me much. So I walked aiming for downtown with the goal of getting something to eat.
I had a brainstorm while I was walking: One of the groups is presenting about the indian mounds on campus. Right now, they're installing what looks like a new fiber network across campus, so there are piles of earth here and there. I took a few pictures, so they could show the indian mounds and then switch to a picture of one of these piles of earth and say, "And here is the lesser know Buryin' Cable Mound".
Walking near the most famous mound, the turtle effigy mound, I heard something scrabbling on some tree bark and got a glimpse of an animal that was larger than a squirrel. So I sat down in the grass and waited. After a while, I could see a little nose poking out -- it was a woodchuck. It was cool enough that the mosquitos were not a torment, so I continued to wait. From my left, a second woodchuck appeared and wandered down toward my right. The second woodchuck looked a bit sickly, with a bald patch on his back. I continued to wait. The first woodchuck looked out a different way past the bole of the tree. Then he took a tentative step down the trunk and looked again. Eventually he crept down to the grass and then he stood up on his hind legs. I moved to get my camera, but it was too late -- he didn't run, but he took a step back toward the tree, looked at me, and then climbed back into his hidey-hole.
I resumed my trek toward downtown and eventually reached the restaurant. They wanted $6.25 for an omelot. I decided I would rather starve than pay that much. So I walked briskly back to campus and check to see if the Commons was open. I had seen a bunch of basketball players come in the afternoon before, so I figured they must be open. And they were! So I got my tasty breakfast. They didn't give me any trouble, though they told another bioquestrian that we were supposed to be eating in Cafe Bio.
We've finished our project and uploaded the project files. We present during the afternoon today. The presentations finish tomorrow morning and BioQUEST will wrap up tomorrow afternoon. It's been a great workshop.
We did our presentation at 3:30. It went pretty well. Most of the people had seen the models already, so no-one was really surprised. Everything worked fine. Tomorrow morning, I get to help Jennifer and Tom present, but I'm otherwise done, except for the fun and games.
