Went on a bike ride with Buzz today. We rode on the Farmington River trail in Connecticut. The trail will eventually run from the coast to Northampton or beyond, but at the moment, it has little sections here and there that are completed. We rode on the largest contiguous section between Simsbury and Farmington. We arrived separately around 9am -- unfortunately we arrived at different trail heads. Having never been there before, we hadn't known good landmarks to establish where we were going to meet. I had seen the first trail head, but I checked the map and saw that it was north of a large unfinished region, so I headed south to the next one. Buzz got there and rode around a bit waiting before he checked the map. Then he realized I must be farther south. During this time, I had gotten out a lawn chair and was sitting by the road to help Buzz spot the trail head -- it was poorly marked at that point. I actually wasn't there long -- about 20 minutes -- but was evidently quite a spectacle. Almost everyone that went by seemed to stare at me, like they'd never seen someone sit in a lawnchair before. Maybe they were admiring my Eyes-in-the-Back-of-Your-Shirt Shirt.
When we got started it, it was already muggy and was getting rapidly warmer. On the way back, I began to get overheated and at one point, I had to walk up a relatively small hill and actually sit down because I was a bit light-headed. So I was rather glad to get back to the car and to buy a big bottle of diet soda to drink. (Yeah, I know I should drink water). It was a good ride and now I'm glad I can feel virtuous tomorrow without having to do any serious exercise.
Afterwards, we had a nice lunch together with Jonathon at Buzz's house. Jonathon is very engaging, though he was a bit worried about me at first. Once when he was investigating a power outlet, I scared him by going through the routine I always did for my children -- I said "Danger!" and pretended to get zapped by the outlet saying "Bzzzt!". He ran screaming to Buzz to be comforted. He was OK after a couple of minutes, but I'm not sure he really trusted me again after that display.
I finally got around to getting X working again on my linux box at home. I'm pretty comfortable with a terminal for getting most my work done, but having a graphical browser is really useful for a bunch of stuff. I was stumped for a long time why it wouldn't do any resolution higher than 800x600. Eventually I remembered that the graphics card doesn't have enough VRAM for anything higher than that at 24bit color, so I set it to use 16bit color and magically it works again. Now I have windowmaker running again and am happily browsing with a fresh copy of Mozilla. Life is good.
