My contact in Germany invited me to attend the Someraj Universitataj Semajnoj in Komarno, Slovakia at the end of August. It is a meeting of the Akademio Internacia de la Sciencoj de San Marino where they offer a series of short science courses in Esperanto and examinations for people who want to earn credit toward degrees. I believe that at this meeting, they're announcing the establishment of the Libera EÅropia Universitato Kelemantia de AIS (LEUKAIS), which will be a functioning Esperanto-language department or college at the University in Komarno. Exciting stuff! I'll fly into Munich, meet with colleagues at the University there to talk about preparing for my sabatical, and then drive through Austria to get to Slovakia where I'll spend a week or more living in Esperantujo. It is wonderful, exciting, and terrifying all at once. I've requested a new passport which is supposed to come in time. I've made my flight arrangements. I've reserved lodging. Now I need to get everything for the fall set up before I leave, because I'll be getting back on the first day of classes. I can't quite believe I'm actually doing this. Insane.

I made excellent progress toward getting my own course set up for the fall. Buzz and I are teaching an on-line science education course for teachers that live in remote locations: Organisms: Diversity and Interactions. We've gotten most of the course materials drafted out in one form or another, but now we've got to collect them all and get them ready for students to actually use. I set up a wiki (using TikiWiki for the class today and got the first prep-page built. The course is ostensibly being offered using the Prometheus system, but we're just building the materials in the usual departmental course resources and then we'll make a few links from the Prometheus environment to our stuff. Unsurprisingly, Prometheus is going away after this fall, being replaced with WebCT. I still have never spoken with a faculty member or student who will admit to liking WebCT.
