When I was a doctoral student, I took a class on the history and philosophy of science -- it was a great class that mostly had philosophy graduate students. They accepted me warmly into their circle and I would hang out with them and talk philosophy. One of them rather took to me and told me one afternoon, "You know, Steve, you could be a philosopher!" That struck me as hysterically funny for some reason and I laughed out loud, which hurt the fellow's feelings a bit, I'm sorry to say. I've always thought its a bit sad that we have to pick and choose what to really get good at: You can only be an expert in one thing in your life time. You can become a past master in several things, but if you choose that route, you can't really be an expert in any of them. In another life, I might have chosen philosophy...
