No-one was going to be home at lunchtime today, so I ate at the Blue Wall again. I listened to the hearings on steroid use in professional sports. Our society is so focused on results, rather than playing fair, that it seems like a no-brainer that people would feel compelled to use steroids. It would be interesting to know how much more money an athlete makes as a result of steroid use. It's got to be huge. Changing the economics wouldn't be sufficient to change the behavior completely because it doesn't address the underlying cultural values. But it would probably be a good start. At the same time, the problem is a moving target because increases in the understanding of biological systems are undoubtedly going to provide additional pathways for influencing performance. But I have to admit that the whole thing is a non-issue as far as I'm concerned, because I really couldn't care less about professional sports.
