This weekend, I coordinated, set up, and (with some help) manned a table about Esperanto at the Better World Festival. In many ways, it was easier than I had expected. At the same time, I'm more tired today than I had expected I would be. Here I am standing behind our display.
I can't really take credit for the display. David Wolff provided most of the elements -- I contributed a few books and put out some cards that people could take. And, of course, spent a large part of my weekend standing or sitting there. But Lucy went with me the first morning, and Sally Lawton took over for both afternoons, so it was a good, collaborative effort.
I don't know how much of an impact it made on anyone. The attendance of the festival was far lower than the organizers had hoped for. I would guess that (including other presenters) something on the order of 6000 people saw the display. A hundred probably stopped by to listen to our spiel or ask questions. We got four email addresses of people who wanted more info. I don't know whether that is typical or not.
It was a valuable experience, however, in spite of the outcome. I now have confidence that I could do something like this again, if it were called for. I probably wouldn't have volunteered to do this one, but someone else volunteered me. Next time, it will be easier organize it -- or even initiate it -- on my own.
